Why I Chose My Major
I was honored to grow up in a family that was led by an entrepreneur. I spent my youth learning 2 important business traits from my father. Those intangible traits were a work ethic that can’t be matched and customer service that must be flawless. Both of which led me into business ownership. However, they did not teach me how to manage a staff, how to price services properly, how to review operations & efficiencies, or the other skills that allow a business to scale and be successful for a lifetime. This realization led to my pursuit of getting a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration from the University of Florida.
I have been blessed in starting a for profit marketing agency and 2 Not for Profit organizations that are increasingly successful each year. My marketing agency has had sustained growth since starting it 4 years ago despite a partner exiting at the same time I was deployed in the Middle East while serving with the US Air Force Reserves. I started an organization 7 years ago that hosts 11+ networking luncheons every week for business professionals to cultivate relationships and pass referrals. The other Not for Profit is a local Chamber of Commerce.
With my Major in Business Administration, I will be able to understand many things that are necessary for business that you just can’t learn through just hard work and perseverance. My Major will allow me to properly set profit margins and ensure that we price our services to allow for overhead, future business development, and that we succeed as owners. I will also be able to utilize my education from my Major to make the company more efficient with a better understanding of operations, accounting, and management tactics. With gained knowledge of the legalities of business and human resources management, I can ensure to have a better perspective of how to properly protect my employees, the company, and how to lead them effectively. My education will have an immediate impact from a leadership standpoint, which will significantly impact many lives around me.
Business leaders that have exceptional knowledge about how to properly lead their organizations significantly impact their staff and communities. Businesses that succeed and care about corporate responsibility are able to provide new jobs, improve the communities they exist in, and provide substantial value to the lives they impact on a daily basis. This should be the ultimate goal of anyone that seeks a business leadership role with a Bachelor’s Degree in Business. Businesses have intangible goals of developing their employees to further impact the people around them, the future companies they will work with, and the customers they serve every day. When a business takes care of its’ employees, those employees will make a lasting impact in the lives of the customers they serve or create products for. My dream is to lead a company that allows both myself and my managers to deeply impact the lives of my employees and their families with skills, characteristics, and development that will benefit for the entirety of their lives and future generations. With my major, I will be able to scale my business from a successful start-up, to a very large company that will produce thousands of jobs by assisting other businesses to grow and will have the capability of giving back to my communities extensively.
This scholarship award, when given to me, will produce results in many different ways and make a difference in thousands of lives to come. With a humble background and having to pay my own way through college while raising two children and funding a start-up, I have significant costs and am forced to pay for all of my college that is not paid by aid through student loans. When I graduate from the University of Florida, I will have close to $70,000 in student debt. Your scholarship award will play a significant role in assisting my family, my employees, and myself with accomplishing a dream and a need that will impact dozens of lives around me, and thousands indirectly. I will be the first person in my father’s bloodline to graduate college and 1 of only 2 in my mother’s, creating a new legacy, and showing my family and many around me that are in similar situations, that college is possible. I thank you for your consideration in allowing me to pursue my dream of completing a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration from the University of Florida to lead a company and start a new legacy in my family.
